ELEMENTARY  COURSE  INFORMATION

2010-11 School Year            Revised 05/18/10
Are you feeling overwhelmed with all the academic subjects you need to teach your child?
The Homeschool Academy of South Jersey, (HASJ), provides courses in academic and enrichment subjects
with highly qualified teachers and small class sizes. The Academy has been operating successfully for eight years,
with many high school students graduating a year in advance. (If you are interested in this service, our consultant
can help you prepare for the accelerated high school program). The Elementary Division includes 4th through 7th
grade. The Secondary Division includes 8th through 12th grade. Classes are held on TUESDAYS from 8:30 a.m.
to 4:30 p.m. The school year is divided into four, nine-week quarters, with a two-week break in late December.
All classes, except electives, are 85 minutes long. A one hour lunch break begins at 11:30am
.
Gamma/Delta Self Paced Math Course: – This course introduces students to the concepts of multiplication
and division. Students will learn how each of the concepts is used in their everyday life, thereby reinforcing the
concept and demonstrating the importance of mastering it. The focus of the course is that Mathematics can and
should be fun.
The Academy offers a unique learning experience. Teachers provide the instruction for all the lessons. Then, the
student completes the homework/tests at home under his/her parents’ guidance and returns the assignments the
following week for the teacher to grade. All homework assignments and grades are available through our on-line
grading service, ‘SnapGrade’. Classes offered at the Academy carry high school credit for Homeschoolers
desiring to earn a diploma. This may be done through HASJ’s High School Diploma Program. Your student’s
schedule will be planned to earn enough credits to meet the New Jersey diploma requirements.
The HASJ is a "low-tuition" based school. Payments are made monthly. The first payment, due with registration,
includes the cost of textbooks, supply fees, lab fees, and diploma. HASJ’s Cancellation Policy states that classes
may be cancelled at any time with a prorated refund. Class size is limited to 10 students, so it is not advisable to
wait until September to register. Discounts are available for families registering two or more children, full time, and
a special discount is also available for registering before August 31st. New registrations will be accepted until
classes are full.
The Homeschool Academy of South Jersey admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin to
all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the
school. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national Secondary Division: 609-805-2548 and
ethnic origin in administration of its educational policies, admissions policies, scholarship and loan
programs, or athletic and other school-administered programs.

4th / 5th Exploring Creation Zoology #2
Once students have learned all about the creatures of the air and the basics of zoology, they can take a trip into
the depths and discover all the strange and unique creatures of the sea, lakes, and rivers. They’ll learn about the
special features of swimming creatures, the different watery environments they live in, what their lifestyles are like,
and the special circumstances they deal with. Then they take a closer look at specific groups of swimming
creatures, including whales, seals, sea cows, sea turtles, sea snakes, sea frogs and toads, primeval reptiles (like
plesiosaurs), fish, sharks, rays, crustaceans, cephalopods, echinoderms, cnidarians, sponges, leeches, and more.
As they study these creatures, they’ll create replicas of them to add to an ongoing “Ocean Box,” and conduct neat
experiments like discovering the insulating power of fat, investigating how electrical current travels through salt
water vs. fresh water, and determining how much of a role temperature plays in tadpole development. They’ll also
add to their notebooks by drawing the animals in them, comparing and contrasting animals, and much more.
Whether the ocean is a familiar place to your children or not, they’ll be equally fascinated by learning about the
unique creatures beneath the water
